About The Grand Strand Astronomers

The Grand Strand Astronomers (GSA) are a 501(c)(3) SC non-profit corporation based in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We are an educational organization whose purposes are:

  • Promote amateur astronomy in the greater Myrtle Beach area
  • Help increase and enhance our member’s knowledge and skills in astronomy
  • Stimulate interest for astronomy and related sciences for the citizens of the greater Myrtle Beach area
  • Encourage members to serve the citizens of the greater Myrtle Beach area by providing educational assistance and events

Membership is open to anyone regardless of prior astronomy experience or whether or not they own a telescope or other astronomical equipment. We have members of all levels of experience and all that is needed is an interest in the night sky.

The GSA schedules two formal meetings per month. The first is an indoor meeting once a month where there is a presentation and/or discussion about astronomy or other space related topics. Currently, the indoor meetings are virtual (via Zoom) and streamed on our YouTube channel, but GSA expects to resume face to face meetings in 2021 as conditions permit. The other meeting is an outdoor observing session where members and visitors with and without telescopes gather in a specified location to enjoy some of the splendors of the sky. All observing sessions are weather dependent and may be cancelled based on predicated conditions (clouds, precipitation, etc.).

In addition to the regular scheduled meetings, GSA will have public observing events where anyone can look through a telescope and have workshops and seminars about how to get into astronomy and use a telescope.
